The Power Rangers reboot has been under much scrutiny, for its "darker is better" approach; for the aesthetic of the costumes; for the aesthetic of Rita Repulsa. However, now our first actual look at the film is here, as the teaser trailer and character posters release.

New York Comic-Con is underway this weekend in New York and one of the big films of the event was Lionsgate's Power Rangers remake. Well, a teaser trailer was shown and has also been released online so, check it out below:

Ever since it was announced, I've had my apprehensions towards Saban's Power Rangers. This is a property I grew up loving as a child; it was goofy, cheesy and fun. However, in a post-Dark Knight Trilogy world, director Dean Israelite and the studio have decided to go Nolan-esque on the franchise and give it a darker, grittier re-imagining. Although, I will say this: after seeing the teaser above, I am somewhat more intrigued than I was before. I still don't think a serious, melodramatic tone is the best approach for a Power Rangers film but I felt that it worked for the first half of the trailer. The Rangers are, traditionally, troubled teens and you get that vibe here (it almost feels like an edgier version of The Breakfast Club) from the high-school scenes teased.

A batch of character posters (embedded below) for the film have also debuted, showing each of the 5 Ranger suits. We didn't actually get to see any of the suits themselves in the teaser (aside from a tiny tease) but perhaps that was for the better. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the aesthetic of these costumes and, from what the images and posters have shown us thus far, the CG for them doesn't look like the best yet either. I'm hoping they will look better in the film itself but, it's the actual Power Rangers aspect of the Power Rangers film that has me most doubtful... which isn't a good thing. I'm trying to remain optimistic though and the trailer wasn't too bad so here's to hoping I'm proved wrong come Summer next year.

Here's the synopsis:
SABAN’S POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
With Dean Israelite at the helm, and starring Dacre Montgomery, Becky Gomez, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and RJ Cyler as the Rangers, with Elizabeth Banks, Bill Hader and Bryan Cranston also supporting, Power Rangers hits on March 24th, 2017.
