Today has been quite the day for trailers. Earlier, we got the dreamy trailer for Damien Chazelle's La La Land (watch it here) and now, the first trailer (and poster) for J.A Bayona's forthcoming adaptation A Monster Calls is here and it's something wild and something beautiful.

Based on the hit children's fantasy novel of the same name, by Patrick Ness (who also wrote the screenplay for the film), A Monster Calls follows newcomer Lewis MacDougall as a 12-year-old boy having family problems, school problems who just needs a friendly monster to help him escape it all. Focus Features have released the first trailer, so check it out:

I haven't read the novel itself nor did I really know what to expect from this film. However, the first trailer for the forthcoming adaptation is absolutely incredible and now has me so excited to see this - and even read the book beforehand too. The film looks absolutely magical and visually arresting; the special effects and the cinematography both look gorgeous here. The score is beautiful too and accompanies the tone and the feel of the reveal so brilliantly too. Oh, and Liam Neeson just sounds absolutely perfect as a tree monster!

J.A Bayona is an exceptional filmmaker; both The Orphanage and The Impossible were emotionally driven films and there's more of that same heart and emotion evident in this trailer too, from the very first scene.  I love fantasy films and this one looks magical and wondrous but also tender and heartbreaking too, which will be interesting to see. The ensemble is stellar and even more reason to go and see this film, with the likes of Felicity Jones and Toby Kebbell playing Conor's parents.

Here's the film's official synopsis:
A visually spectacular drama from acclaimed director Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Impossible”), based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel. 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith.
With J.A Bayona at the helm, and starring Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Sigourney Weaver and Liam Neeson, A Monster Calls will open in the U.S on October 21st, 2016, before hitting the U.K a few months later, on January 6th, 2017.

And here's a gorgeous looking poster for the film too:
