Dreamworks Animation have given us some truly outstanding animations over the years, from Shrek to How To Train Your Dragon to Kung Fu Panda. Their second release of 2016, Trolls, has received its first trailer but do the studio have yet another winner on their hands?

Loosely based on the phenomenon that was the Trolls dolls, with the big, colourful hair, in the 90's, Dreamworks' latest animation stars Justin Timberlake as a grumpy troll that is forced to team with Anna Kendrick's quirky, happy troll Poppy when an evil force threatens their upbeat lifestyle. The first trailer has been released so here it is:

The trailer for the film is sweet. The trolls are certainly cute and the visuals look energetic and impressive - Dreamworks always deliver great animated visuals. However, as cute and colourful as the trailer is, it's also pretty cloying. The plot seems all too conventional and there doesn't look to be much to this film other than some quirkiness and dumb fun for the kids.

Then again, it's still early days. The cast is pretty great and the trailer, as pretty flat and competent as it may be, will make you smile. Trolls definitely doesn't look up the standards of some of Dreamworks' other animations but it certainly looks it could be a somewhat decent, fun and cute little flick. I have had Timberlake's Can't Stop The Feeling on repeat though... because damn that song is just so catchy!

Here's your synopsis:
DreamWorks Animation’s TROLLS is an irreverent comedy extravaganza with incredible music! From the genius creators of SHREK, TROLLS stars Anna Kendrick as Poppy, the optimistic leader of the Trolls, and her polar opposite, Branch, played by Justin Timberlake. Together, this unlikely pair of Trolls must embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the only world they’ve ever known.
With Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn at the helm, and starring the voice talents of Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden and Gwen Stefani, Trolls opens on October 21st, 2016.
