We've seen a whole slew of trailers this past week, from The Magnificent Seven to Jason Bourne. Now, to celebrate Earth Day today, we have the brand-new trailer for the long-awaited Independence Day: Resurgence.

I loved the original Independence Day - it's a fun popcorn flick - and, now, 20 years since its release, we're finally set to return to that world and reunite with those characters (well, most of them anyway, minus Will Smith) in the long-awaited sequel: Independence Day: Resurgence. We've seen a short teaser and Super Bowl spot for the film before but, whilst they were intriguing, we haven't seen too much from the project and I've always been skeptical at the idea of a sequel to Roland Emmerich's original.

To celebrate Earth Day in ironic and brilliantly timed fashion, 20th Century Fox have debuted a new trailer for the forthcoming sequel and, I have to admit, it's pretty damn incredible. The scale of this film looks HUGE and some of the action sequences are truly epic and enormous. This looks like the definition of a Summer film: an epic, fun, popcorn flick in every sense of the word. We have actions and explosions aplenty as war breaks out when the aliens return to Earth for their revenge - and to tear down the landmarks too, apparently. There's definitely a couple of "holy shit" moments within this reveal and I'm now excited to see the full thing.

Here's the film's official synopsis:
From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996’s Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally.
But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
With Roland Emmerich returning to the helm, and starring Jeff GoldblumMaika MonroeLiam HemsworthJudd Hirsch and Bill Pullman, Independence Day: Resurgence opens June 24th, 2016.
