The 2016 annual Academy Awards take place in Hollywood this Sunday and two nominees for the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories are Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Well, the two will be working together on the forthcoming adaptation of M.L Stedman's The Light Between Oceans and the film has received its first trailer.

The acclaimed novel's adaption is set to be directed by Derek Cianfrance, who's previous work includes Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. Both of those films were incredible and really powerful so it'll be interesting to see how he tackles The Light Between Oceans, in the similar bracket of being a poignant drama. Michael Fassbender plays a lighthouse keeper with Alicia Vikander as his wife and the film will follow their lives after they rescue and raise a baby that got stranded and comes adrift.

Entertainment One and Dreamworks have debuted the first trailer for the forthcoming film and it is beautiful. For starters, this film looks visually gorgeous, with Adam Arkapaw on cinematography duties, having worked on Macbeth last year (also starring Fassbender) which was also visually arresting. The film also looks very emotional and the trailer alone was truly heartbreaking and poignant. Cianfrance is great at creating resonating and powerful pictures and this looks much of the same. I'm a huge fan of Fassbender's and Vikander's and I can't wait to see what they bring to this. With a whole cast and crew at the top of their game and such a heartbreaking, beautiful trailer, I cannot wait to see this film.

Here's the film's official synopsis:
From acclaimed director Derek Cianfrance, (BLUE VALENTINE, A PLACE BEYOND THE PINES), and based on the extraordinary best-selling novel from M.L Stedman, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, is a beautiful yet heart-breaking story of love and sacrifice.
On a remote Australian island in the years following World War I, lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander), discover a boat washed ashore carrying a dead man and a two-month old baby.
Rescuing the infant, they make the decision to raise her as their own but the consequences of their choice prove to be devastating.
Also starring Rachel Weisz and produced by David Heyman, The Light Between Oceans will be released later this year.
With Derek Cianfrance at the helm, and starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz, The Light Between Oceans opens sometime later this year - a release date will be announced very soon, most likely.
