Fox are on a roll this week. After delivering a stunning first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse the other day, the studio have gone and surprised us yet again by, today, releasing our first look at the sequel to 1996's Independence Day, next year's Independence Day: Resurgence.

This evening, out of nowhere, 20th Century Fox have gone and debuted the first trailer for the forthcoming sequel during a football game tonight, in the U.S, and now it has found its way online. 20 years in the making, this reveal gives us our first official look at next year's highly anticipated follow-up to 1996's original and there seems to be a whole lot of nostalgia and aliens ahoy!

The reveal doesn't give away too many details but it sets up the basic idea of the premise, nonetheless: the aliens are back and Earth needs to get its shit together to defeat them. Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman return, with the former now leading the Earth Space Defence Program (an initiative that was setup to be prepared for if the aliens ever attacked again) and the latter now sporting a grey beard and learning of the species' plans through a connection to them which he got in the first film. There's CG and SFX aplenty in the reveal but it looks pretty damn cool. I also love how Pullman's iconic speech from the original is cut off at the end of the trailer.

Here's the film's official synopsis:
From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996’s Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally.
But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
With Roland Emmerich returning to the helm, and starring Jeff GoldblumMaika MonroeLiam HemsworthJudd Hirsch and Bill Pullman, Independence Day: Resurgence opens June 24th, 2016.
