With the world premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens taking place tonight and all eyes on the return of the franchise this week, Paramount have gone and reminded us that that's not the only mega franchise with Star in the title, by debuting the first trailer for the third Star Trek film, Star Trek: Beyond.

When J.J Abrams reboot the hit franchise in 2009, with Star Trek, the film did great and got fans excited to see these characters and this world back on the big-screen. However, after all the excitement it generated, its follow-up, Star Trek: Into Darkness was disappointing - especially after all the shenanigans and hype with Benedict Cumberbatch's antagonist. Next year though, the franchise is set to receive its third instalment, Star Trek: Beyond, and Fast and Furious franchise director is taking over the helm from Abrams - who has been a little pre-occupied in "a galaxy far, far away" recently.

This evening, Paramount Pictures have debuted the first trailer for the forthcoming threequel - which will play in front of The Force Awakens this weekend (ooh, controversy!) - and it gives us our first look at what has, otherwise, been a very mysterious film. The reveal doesn't give too much away in terms of plot details and a synopsis hasn't been revealed so we're still a little in the dark as far as understanding the premise of the film. However, there are still some cool action shots and footage on offer here.

It's certainly a cool trailer for a cool blockbuster, if not a very good trailer for a Star Trek film. There just doesn't seem to be the same feel that Abrams brought to the other two films, and this seems to play out more so like a Fast and Furious film set in space (the plot to F&F 9, I'm calling it) with Star Trek characters and ideals thrown in. Although, this is only our first look at the film - and it's merely a teaser - so we can't be judging the film quite yet. Besides, it's a cool trailer nonetheless. It just doesn't quite feel like a Star Trek film.

With Justin Lin taking over the helm from J.J Abrams, and starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Karl Urban, Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella, Star Trek: Beyond is set to land in cinemas on July 22nd, 2016.
