There's been an abundance of superhero related news in the past couple of weeks (in between all the excitement from Comic-con and the trailers and news to have hit the web recently), but it's not over yet as some first images from next year's X-Men: Apocalypse have been released.

Just last weekend, director Bryan Singer was joined by the cast of the film in San Diego, for the Fox panel at Comic-Con. Storming Hall H and debuting a rough cut of a teaser trailer after just 5 weeks of filming, the fans in attendance went crazy. Now, as they return to continue shooting the project (which is just past halfway in the filming process), some first images have emerged and you can find details about them below. You can also find my report of the X-Men: Apocalypse Comic-Con panel and footage here.

The stills come from EW, who also have some new details about what the film will be about. Picking up 10 years after the events of last year's hit Days of Future PastApocalypse will see mutants now accepted by the world. But as Oscar Isaac's titular villain awakens after having been asleep for decades, he decides that the world doesn't quite fit his fancy so sets about taking charge and, well, bringing about the Apocalypse for our mutants. As director Singer said to the publication, "It's a chaotic world of conflict and war and destruction. It's one giant civilisation that now requires one giant culling."

Of course, Apocalypse won't be able to take over on his own so sets about gathering his "four horsemen" - accomplices that will help him bring the world to its knees. His horsemen are made up of Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). As the film picks up, though, Magneto is trying to turn over a new leaf. "He's fallen in love and has basically put his metal ways behind him," Fassbender says. However, everything's not that simple and "Apocalypse finds Erik at a low ebb and recruits him," he continues.

The images are great. We get our first look at the film's big bad himself, in all his blue/purple glory, armored up and looking pretty pissed off. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the look of the villain (as it's quite different from the comics) but, in my opinion, Isaac looks great. He's unrecognisable as the antagonist and looks pretty menacing. We also get a look at some of the returning cast members, including Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Evan Peters. Accompanying the stills, some character shots were also released - also by EW. The shots give us a better look at the newcomers to the franchise, the young mutants we'll be seeing in the picture, like Kodi-Smit McPhee as Nightcrawler and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops.

With Bryan Singer at the helm, newcomers Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi-Smit McPhee, Sophie Turner and Oscar Isaac will joining returning actors Evan Peters James McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult for X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set to release in cinemas on May 27th, 2016.
