Just the other day we got the intense first trailer for the Jake Gyllenhaal starring Everest (watch that here). However, in that, he was sharing the spotlight with a stellar ensemble. Now, the second trailer for the actor's first and main 2015 film - Southpaw - has arrived and the spotlight is on him.

I'm a huge fan of Gyllenhaal's. His films, of late, have been incredible and his performances, even more so! Just last year, he completely transformed to play the skinny, slick, piercing Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler. Well, this year will see him take on the role of boxer Billy "The Great" Hope, in director Antoine Fuqua's Southpaw, and, once again, he is completely unrecognisable  - after having bulked up - for what looks like one of his performances yet.

The Weinstein Company have released the second trailer for the film and it's amazing. It's a lot shorter than the first reveal we saw a few months back but that means it's a lot more packed and tense. Gyllenhaal has, yet again, struck gold. He is, arguably, one of the best, most hardworking actors in the industry today and this shows why. He has completely transformed for the role and the film just looks excellent. Southpaw looks action-packed, dramatic, intense and it is, quite easily, one of my most anticipated films of this Summer. I think we'll be hearing a lot more about this film come Awards season too.

Here's the film's official synopsis:
From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award® nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting… one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.
With Antoine Fuqua at the helm, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora and 50 Cent, Southpaw will open on July 31st, 2015.
