I love gangster dramas. Goodfellas and The Godfather are both amongst my favourite movies ever. These films also have the tendency to score big with awards too. Well, the first trailer has arrived for Black Mass and it looks like the trend isn't going to be stopping just yet.

Say what you will about Johnny Depp, I still think he's still somewhat of a decent actor. Sure, he has gone off the rails a little and the large majority of his recent projects have all been commercial and critical bombs. However, all the actor needs is a hit. After seeing the first trailer for Black Mass, it seems as though he might have found it.

Based on a true story, Depp takes on our lead role of Whitey Bulger, one of the most notions and most wanted gangsters in American history. As we can see in the trailer, he has clearly undergone an intense transformation for the role - one of his better ones of late. He certainly looks the part; imposing, creepy and terrifying.

As far as the reveal itself goes, I loved it. This film looks so damn epic. I love the dark vibe to it, as well as the dark comedy - Bulger giving his 6 year old son advice on how to get away with a crime is truly hilarious. The ensemble cast is made up of such talented actors too and, again, I cannot wait to see Johnny in this role. He looks like a badass, ruthless villain and it's probably not a far fetch to assume that he may draw some buzz - with this performance - come award season.

Here's the film's official synopsis:
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
With Scott Cooper at the helm, and starring Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Corey Stoll and Dakota Johnson, Black Mass will open, over in the U.S, on 18th September before reaching here, in the U.K, a couple of months later, on 13th November, 2015.
