Just the other day, we got our first look at Quentin Tarantino's forthcoming Western The Hateful Eight and, now, a whole slew of stills have arrived - including character portraits and some behind-the-scenes images.
Entertainment Weekly revealed the character portraits, of which there are 8. Featured in the shots, we have Kurt Russell's John Roth, Samuel L. Jackson's Major Marquis Warren, Jennifer Jason Leigh's Daisy Domergue, Michael Madsen's Joe Gage, Tim Roth's Oswaldo Mobray, Walton Goggins' Chris Mannix, Bruce Dern's General Sanford Smithers and, last but not least, Demian Bihir's Bob. They make up the titular Hateful Eight.
There's also a whole handful of behind-the-scenes shots. There's definitely a Western vibe. Russell looks badass, as does Jackson - both sporting some awesome looking taches and beards. The tension is certainly there, as the latter has a gun pointed to him - by the former - in one of the stills. There's also Jason Leigh with the black-eye. She was quoted, when describing her on-screen relationship with Kurt, saying that it's "essentially the most dysfunctional couple since Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf."
I'm a big fan of Westerns. I'm also a big fan of Tarantino's. I think that all of his films, with very few exceptions, are phenomenal and The Hateful Eight sounds like it's going to be continue his great track record, as another work of true art - like all of the previous projects of his. It has an intriguing plot and sounds like it has the potential to be something special, plus there's the impressive cast ensemble too. Seeing the tension and heat between them rise should be a lot of fun to watch.
"For me, it has more of a Western Iceman Cometh kind of vibe about it," the director told EW, when talking about his latest cinematic endeavor. "A bunch of guys in a room who can't trust each other. That wasn't a marching order when I sat down to write the script, but pretty quickly I realised this is kind of a nice coming-full-circle." Hopefully it won't be too long now until we get to see more of the film; in the form of a trailer and poster.
Here's the film's official synopsis:
In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all.
With Quentin Tarantino at the helm, and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, Channing Tatum, Demian Bichir, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern and Walton Goggins, The Hateful Eight is set to open towards the end of this year.
