Well, this is definitely... interesting, to say the least. After months of teasing, the day has finally arrived where the world is given its first look at Jared Leto's incarnation of The Joker, from the upcoming Suicide Squad.

Ever since it was announced that the Dallas Buyer's Club star would be taking on the role of the iconic villain for DC's Suicide Squad, fans have been clamouring to get their first look at him. For the last few months, we've seen little glimpses of the actor's transformation - thanks to his Instagram and director David Ayer dropping teases on his Twitter. However, today, our first, official look at Leto as The Joker has arrived.
Take a look at Ayer's tweet and we'll discuss it below:
Well, isn't that... something?! It's certainly a different, more unique look - compared to previous iterations of the DC character. Leto's really losing his mind. There's a lot going on. We have the usual pale skin and green hair and I think the purple Latex glove is a nice, creepy touch. The shot certainly sends the disturbing, creepy vibe that The Joker's all about plus I love the uncanny resemblance to The Killing Joke here. However, I'm not going to sugarcoat it, it's not a great first look reveal. I'm not too fond of it, I'll be honest.
The main reason for that is probably just the tattoos. We have seen a badass, brooding tattoo-donning Joker in the comics before and it looked quite awesome. However, something just doesn't work with Leto's bodywork. For starters, it looks poorly photo-shopped on. The whole "Ha, Ha, Ha" across his arm and shoulder just seem a bit too far. We get that he's known for his laugh but why would he get it emblazoned across his body? It makes him out as more so a messed up model than a psychopathic villain.

Don't get me wrong, I think Jared is a phenomenal actor. He's hugely talented and has a bit of a maniacal wit and charisma about himself as well. I definitely think he'll make a great Joker and I understand that Ayer's going for a more The Dark Knight Returns-esque Joker, which I think is great. I love the wildness here too! As far as a first impression goes though, I just find this image a little bit too off-putting and unusual. Who knows, though? It could be that this is one of the best portrayals of The Joker yet, when actually in action, so we'll only really be able to judge when we seem some footage. Although, looking at the image, it just feels as though there's just something wrong.

With Fury's David Ayer at the helm and starring Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Jared Leto (The Joker) and Cara Delevinge (Enchantress), Suicide Squad will open on August 4th, 2016.
