Video games invading Earth? Pac-Man eating someone's hand off? Sounds pretty absurd, right? Well, that's exactly what's happening in the teased trailer for this Summer's forthcoming Pixels. Yes please!
Helmer of Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter films, Chris Colombus, is back, with his first feature film since 2010's Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, with the Adam Sandler starring Pixels - a film which will see iconic video game characters invade Earth.
With the film's Summer 2015 release drawing nearer by the second, Sony Pictures have gone and debuted the film's first trailer (well, more like teaser trailer) and it's pretty awesome. We have giant, pixelated video game heroes - like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong - laying waste to the world and who's going to stop them? A group of gamers. Umm... hell yes!
The idea is fun and atypical and could really work if done well. Being a teaser means that reveal doesn't show off too much but, from what we can say, it looks full of energy and the visuals look stunning too. It'll be Sony's only major profile Summer blockbuster so there's certainly a lot of potential. Being a gamer myself, I can say that I'm excited for this one. It's on like Donkey Kong.
Here's the film's official synopsis:
In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Dinklage and Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist. The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the short film of the same name by Patrick Jean. The film is produced by Adam Sandler, Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Allen Covert. Executive Producers are Barry Bernardi, Michael Barnathan, Jack Giarraputo, Heather Parry, Tim Herlihy, Steve Koren, Patrick Jean, Benjamin Darras, Johnny Alves, Matias Boucard, Seth Gordon, and Ben Waisbren.
With Chris Colombus at the helm and starring Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Brian Cox and Peter Dinklage, Pixels will be invading the U.S. on 24th July, 2015, before hitting us, in the UK, the following month, on 12th August.
