"LET IT GO... LET IT GO! CAN'T HOLD IT BACK ANYMOOOOREEE!" Well, letting it go is certainly something Disney won't be doing with Frozen as... are you ready for it... a sequel has FINALLY been officially announced. This is too great. Altogether now, "DO YOU WANNA BUILD A SNOWMAN..."

Raking in over a MASSIVE $1.2 billion at the box-office, back in 2013, and dominating in the soundtrack charts, merchandise and awards, Disney's Frozen wasn't only the highest grossing film of the year but it also quickly became the highest grossing animation of all time! It's no wonder Disney aren't going to let it go just yet. We've had rumblings and rumours of a sequel, Idina Menzel also talked about it last year too and, this evening, it has FINALLY been officially announced at the Disney's shareholder's call, in San Francisco. It's about time. It's actually happening people. Get excited.

I'm over the moon right now. I genuinely am because, I'm not going to hide it, I adored the animation and I can bet that the majority of you did too. It actually was a brilliant film. News of a sequel doesn't exactly as much of a surprise though (but it is still cool)... I mean, it was always going to happen sooner or later. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee will be returning to helm the film which is pretty great considering that only last week, the two were completely denying rumours of Frozen 2 even happening. Buck said, "It’s been in the press that we are doing [Frozen 2], and we would ask each other, ‘Are we?’ They’d have a date and they’d have a cast and it was like, OK.” Lee added, “It all comes down to the story… Until we find our way into what’s next, emotionally, it will feel too big. We just finished the short two weeks ago. One year ago, it was a lot to even think about doing a short. We were quite tired. We don’t really know what it’s like to stop for a minute and think about what we want to do next.”

No release date or any other real information about the follow-up was revealed. It's happening. That's all we know. However, even just that is good enough for me. Of course, though, we'll have 7-minute long Frozen Fever short premiering alongside Disney's Cinderella, later this month (see the trailer here). Consider that a tease for the sequel itself - Frozen 2: Rogue One, as Josh Gad joked at the presentation (in a nod to the Star Wars spin-off being titled Star Wars: Rogue One, which also happened the at the call today). Oh, we also got the tweet, embedded below, from Kristen Bell. It's official, folks... Better believe it.
I guess, if there's any downside to news of a sequel to Frozen, it would be that the reputations of Disney sequels are just as good as nothing. With the exception of a few sequels, the majority of them suck. Take a look at Cars or Monsters University for example. They're far, FAR from matching their predecessors and, in a way, bring the whole franchise down. I'm just kind of skeptical that as to the fact that Frozen 2 doesn't turn out well and ruins the franchise's quality. The original, though, was a film that broke trends and records so it could be that a sequel is the same in that it's just as good, if not better, than the hit musical that arrived in 2013. I'm still excited, nonetheless.

Here's the official press release:

It’s of-f-f-f-f-icial: “Frozen 2” is in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios with directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho, the Oscar®-winning filmmaking team behind “Frozen.” The news was announced at Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders this morning by Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company; John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and actor Josh Gad, who provides the voice of Olaf from “Frozen.” A release date and production details are on ice for now.

So, we know that Frozen 2 is happening with Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck on directing duties. Josh Gad will be also be back, reprising his role as Olaf, as will Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, returning to voice Anna and Elsa. A release date is yet to be revealed but we can, most likely, expect to hear some more news on the film in the coming few months or so. Anyway, if you excuse me, I'm off to go and listen to the Frozen soundtrack again... I just have to.
