You may recall that a couple of months back, news broke that Whiplah actress Melissa Benoist was cast a the titular lead in the forthcoming Supergirl series. Well, having recently entered production, our firs look at her in full costume ha arrived and, well, it's awesome... to say the least.

Previously leaked details suggested that the Supergirl costume would follow the traditional route and would keep the iconic, classic red cape and skirt. It, now, seems that's the case. But, on top of this, it will also be fitting the modern update too, kind of having a similar dark look to Henry Cavill's updated Superman outfit from 2013's Man of Steel. It's nostalgia but it's contemporary too which is good. It definitely looks great and Benoist already looks like she'll make a good heroine, fitting the role perfectly.

Benoist will play Kara, Superman's long-lost cousin in the upcoming CBS series. As the show's mythology goes, Kara at age 12 was sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who teach her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. However, after having kept them in for about a decade, she is forced to pull out her powers in public, during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins to embrace these abilities by helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.

If you're a regular to this site, you'll know that I absolutely ADORED Whiplash - it was fantastic. Having only opened earlier this month, it is probably going to be 2015's best film (read my review of it here). I thought that Benoist was fabulous in it, despite how small her role was. She brought a lot of charm and love to this otherwise dark, gritty film and I cannot wait to see her in this (being the TV aficionado that I am) and even more so following this reveal.  She seems to be the perfect choice to bring Kara to life on the little screen.

Her other, bigger acting credential is her role as Marley in Glee, which she joined back in Season 4. She has also had some guest roles in Homeland and The Good Wife in the past too and is set to appear, later this year, in The Longest Ride - opposite Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood - as well as Al Pacino's Danny Collins.

The series is set to take place in the same universe as CW's The Flash and Arrow and considering it's on CBS, CW's sister network, and all three heroes are a part of DC, we could possibly be seeing a crossover in the near future. Let's, at least, not cross it off as a possibility. Here's to hoping. The Supergirl pilot will be penned by Greg Berlanti (CW's two aforementioned shows) and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and it's expected to premiere towards the end of 2015, start of 2016. A confirmed date is yet to be announced. With this news now out, we can expect to be hearing more about the show in the coming months.
