Last week, Disney released The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer and, when we broke it down, we noticed a few nods and teases to Black Panther. Well, after years of rumours, Marvel have officially announced that the hero will be getting his own film, as well as the actor taking on the role. We also have some cool concept art to share with you!
Recently, being a Marvel fan couldn't be much better. The past few weeks have been superhero PACKED - with lots from the studio - but it's not ending just yet. During a special Marvel event, in L.A, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige unveiled the forthcoming Phase 3 slate. They did in corresponding order, earliest release dates first and just working from there - from 2016 to 2018.
Well, announced to release on November 3rd, 2017 - the their and final Marvel film of that year - is, none other than what this whole article is about, Black Panther. It's finally happening, everyone! The titular hero will have his very own solo outing! However, it gets better.
The first film kicking off Phase 3 is Captain America 3 - now titled Civil War - and then Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans came on-stage to talk about the project, which puts Iron Man and Captain America head to head. However, the unusual and surprising thing came when, out of nowhere, Downey Jr. welcomes Black Panther, himself, to the floor and on comes... Chadwick Boseman!
That's right, folks! Boseman is going to be playing the beloved, badass hero in his solo outing, come 2017, but, also, of course, in other projects that Marvel decide he should be in.
But, other than announcing who'll be playing Panther, there was a reason that RDJ brought him out and that is, simply, because he will feature - as a main character - in 2016's Civil War. Feige also mentioned that it'll be the first time we'll see the character, in costume and kicks ass, on the big screen - he's said to have a pretty major role in the film.
Here's what Feige said about it, "Black Pather, what our little song and dance at the end was meant to signifiy, and I’ll just clarify it for you: he is definitively a big part of Civil War. We will meet him for the first time in Civil War, in costume."
In the Age of Ultron trailer, we saw Vibranium - found only in Black Panther's home are of Wakanda's - but his arch-nemesis Ulysses Klaw also made an appearance in the reveal too, as Andy Serkis, so it just begs the question of will Boseman make an appearance - even just a tiny cameo - in the sequel, even if he isn't in his suit? It could be. We'll just have to wait and see.
Feige also commented on that. He said,“Black Panther and all of Wakanda is one of the most interesting characters in Marvel history. Something I already showed you today contains an Easter egg that leads directly into ‘Black Panther.’ He’s a bit of a prince, he may even become a bit of a king, but it’s all about how this isolationist country meets the world. Maybe it goes well, maybe it doesn’t.”
Whilst we got the basic casting news, from the event, Deadline is reports that Boseman, in fact, has a FIVE FILM deal with Marvel. So, it looks like he won't just appear in Civil War and his standalone - Black Panther. He'll probably also appear in both Part 1 and 2 of The Avengers: Infinity War and, for his fifth film, it could be a planned sequel to 2017's Black Panther?
Little is known about Boseman's role in Civil War but it's thought that he'll replace Spider-Man - since Sony own the film rights to him now and not Marvel - but, nonetheless, he'll surely have to choose a side to take. Downey asked him who'd he'd choose between him and Chris Evans and Boseman replied with, "Iron Man, Cap, as much as I respect you both, Black Panther is kind of his own guy." What a legend, that's the RIGHT answer.
He then continued, "In all seriousness, I'm blessed to be a part of this Marvel Universe and working with you both. I'm looking forward to making majic together." So, basically, what I'm hearing is that Black Panther beats both Iron Man and Captain America? Ahaha, just kidding. But, seriously, seeing this fan-favourite character appear alongside two other fan-favourites, as they all kick each other's asses , is going to be AWESOME!
Along with the announcement of a Black Panther standalone and Boseman being cast in the role, Marvel have released some cool concept art online - showing the hero off in all his might and glory: he looks epic!
No director is attatched, yet, to Black Panther, as far as we know. No plot details have arrived either. However, the film will star Chadwick Boseman as our lead and, most likely, Andy Serkis as his arch-nemesis Ulysses Klaw. Black Panther crawls in on November 3rd, 2017. He'll first appear in Captain America: Civil War, though, and that arrives on May 6th, 2016.
